Self portraits

You might already have seen some of these photos, some might have been posted here and you can see all of them on my homepage, www.isabellnwedin.com (Project-echo) But I do think it could be nice to show them here as well, I hope that I'm not boring you.The hole thing about self portraits started in the year 2005 at my second year at art school in Kristianstad. We had to do a project for the hole last year and back then I was in love with Frida Kahlo. I tried to paint like her, I read about her, I saw movies about her and I even held a class about her. I still like her today, I find her work amazing but I feel like my crush has past. Any way, my favorite teacher told me that maybe I should make a project about myself, like she did her hole life. At first I thought the idea was ridiculous, how could I make interesting art using myself? Now I understand that doing a project about yourself don't really have that much to do with the need to create great art, it has to do about discovering what you have hidden for yourself. That year that I did self portraits, using different media, I for the first time could step outside of myself and see myself as a tool. Like too many girls and young women I was not appreciating what I looked like and I could not understand if someone else did. Today it's different, I will never look like a supermodel but I don't care. I have other qualities that I think are far more important than the way I look. I look back at the girl I was then and I'm happy to see how I have grown. I still have a lot of faults but hey who does not. I'm headstrong, long-sighted and many more things. Any way, I don't paint and draw that much anymore, I've found my way of expressing myself, I love how instant photography is. But I must say that I don't take that many self portraits, only a handful every year. This year I will try to change that because I'm hoping that not that far away in the future I will be able to have an exhibition with self portraits. There is just something very liberating about photographing yourself. I have no problem photographing myself in the nude since I know that I'm in complete power, I decide everything. The only downside is that I have a tendency of being outside the frame or cutting my head or feet of...

Between heaven and hell

Sleep is a behavioral state that is a natural part of every individual’s life. We spend about one-third of our lives asleep. When we close our eyes we all enter different worlds that can be very far from the one we call reality. It's amazing really when you think about it, we have no real control. I dream often about horses that I used to have and I think it's beautiful how I get to travel in time even if it makes me a little bit sad. Then we have the other, kind of strange dreams like last night when I dreamt I had superpowers, I could create fire with my bare hands. Our brain is a magical thing and it works in mysterious ways. I feel a little bit sorry for those who can't dream. There is a hole world inside of us that they are missing.

I know it's not good for the environment to fly but I can't help how exited it makes me to be up in the sky. It's so beautiful there, above the clouds. Even if I hate getting up early there is just something magical by getting on a plane just as the sun rises. The pictures below are taken on my trips 2010 & 2011 to Berlin, to Copenhagen, to Milan, to Morocco and to Mallorca. I can't really tell which one is from where, they are all just from somewhere...

Winter

Winter has arrived for real and I spend most of my time indoors with a cup of tea in my hand. January is a slow month and I am trying to enjoy it because I know that in a couple of month I will be working my as of. There is no such thing as a summer vacation for a wedding photographer as me. But I don't mind that at all. I have another kind of freedom than a "regular" worker and I love that. Soon I fly to Milan for retouching and assisting at a fashion shoot for an Italian photographer. After that I will go directly to Berlin for a couple of days of hardcore fun with lovely friends. It's time to take down mine and Manolo Ty's exhibition at Tiger Lilys. We will have a finissage so if you are in town you should definitely stop by for free drinks and cool people. I will will post more info soon.

P.s the girl in the picture is Cosette, one of my favorite models. I found this one today when I was looking for pictures that I missed the first time.

Problems with my Facebook site...

Since last week my facebook site Isabell N Wedin / Arty Farty Photography in not working well. Things that I post disappear and the things that you can see is not possible for every follower to see. I have no idea how to solve this problem and facebook is not really helping. There is a bug and it so annoying. If you have had a similar problem please let me know. Until then there is not much I can do about it.... :(

I've heard somewhere that the difference between good and bad art is that good art makes you forget about reality. For a second there is something else that captures you and makes you forget time and space. But I also think that great art is something that you can connect with. Sometimes when I go to art shows I feel like an outsider. I can not understand what I see and it doesn't trigger any emotions, besides the fact that I get frustrated. I guess that's why I love photography because It's easier to connect with an images that is somehow reality. But it's hard in one way to really capture someone with what you do, as a photographer, at least for a longer amount of time. A photograph is quite flat when you think about it. It doesn't make sounds, it has no real scent, it doesn't move and it has no taste. A photograph has to speak to your own dreams and memories.
Now and then I take self portraits and I still don't know why. It's not that I'm narcissistic because most of the times you can't see that it's me. Maybe it's a way of confirming my own existence. It's a scary thought that we are all gonna die one day. I think most of us want to leave a trace behind because we are afraid of being forgotten.

On one of my walks, that I try to take everyday, I found a magic spot of bushes with white berries. They problaby had a different color once but winter has made them pale. I had a vision of a blond girl standing in the middle of the bushes. I spoke about this idea with one of my favorite models Gabriella (Bella) and she refined my vision with her styling and make-up. We also found ourselves blessed with the sun, that is hard to catch these days in January. In my favorite picture, the first one, it looks like she and the sun is kissing. It just feels a little bit magical...

What a creative and wonderful day. I spent some time with my friend/DJ/model Gabriela Calheira Diestel. I've photographed her several times but every time she brings something new to the table, she is full of wonderful surprises. Since it's winter we started out indoors in my apartment. She did both the make-up and the styling herself. Usually I give her some words to kind of set the direction of the shoot, to let her know what I have in mind, but then it's all about what she creates. I love working this way, it's so much fun and so spontaneous. Tonight I give you these four pictures but tomorrow your in for a real treat. Then I will post the photos from outdoor which I think are pretty awesome.

It's my belief that we all have to find something that we are good at, something that enriches our lives, makes it worth living. For some it's clear to begin with and others search their hole lives for it. At the same time we have to kind of fit in to the structure, be part of society, make it all go around. Money rules the world in many ways, it can really give you opportunities, a feeling of security but in the end happiness has to come from inside of us. I have to decides what is best for me, what makes me happy. When we grow up we learn that the world is wide open, there is so much out there, waiting for us but at the same time we are hit by reality who says we have to seattle down, get a real job, have a family, play by the rules. But what if that is not what will make you happy. Then you are seen as either a failure or really brave. There are people close to me who question my way of life, who doesn't understand. I don't make a lot of money on photography, I hope I will one day. But I make enough to make a living and the happiness I get from photographing or being creative is amazing. I love photographing people, to connect with them. In Sweden wedding photography is not so highly seen as in the US. But I don't care because it gives me good energy to be part of someones special day, to know that those images are gonna be treasured for a very long time and mean a lot to someone. And it's not easy photographing a wedding, you get one shoot at it and you have to focus all the time. I guess that is what I love about photography, that you have to be awake, you have be in the moment. I guess you could say photography is my kind of meditation. I have found something I'm good at, something that enriches my life, something that makes my life worth living.

Part 2

A clean slate

2011 was not my favorite year, too much loss, too much heartache and too little happiness. It had it's golden moments for sure but over all it was not a good one. When things get's really bad I always say that at least no one died, but sadly it was two times 2011 I couldn't say that. I might have gotten my heart broken by a foolish boy but compared to loosing people that is nothing. One of my favorite singer/poet has written a song where he sings: As long as I am here you will be here too. I think that is very beautiful and true. I will carry the memories of these people with me as I face a new year and new challenges.
Some of us like to make promises as we welcome the new year. Last night I decided that I need to start dreaming again. I wonder where they all went...I'm usually the person who tells other people that it is so important to dream and to believe that you can make it happen. I think that I kind of forgot myself on the way. I'm not unhappy, don't get me wrong but I think it's so easy to get comfortable, to stop challenging yourself and really put yourself out there. I think people like when there is a new year ahead of us because it feels like we are given a new chance, a clean slate. Now I just have to find out what I want to do with mine...but it will involve my love for photography for sure. I'll keep you posted...

Canon is my homie

I've gotten the question a lot of what kind of camera I use. I started out as an analog photographer. In high school I fell in love with the darkroom and I spent as much time has possible there. Back then I was only interested in black and white photography. This continued at art school and it wasn't until I went to photography school that I started to use digital cameras. This was a little more than 5 years ago. After a short romance with an Olympus I switched to Canon. I bought a 5D and it has been a wonderful companion until a couple of month ago when it broke down after a fall which I wasn't responsible for. It might seem strange but that made so sad. I've had so much fun with that camera, we have been so many places and met so many people together.
I'm waiting for the release of the 5D Mark 3. Until then I have invested in two used 5Ds. It's the perfect camera for me. I will never get a Hasselblad, which if you didn't know is a swedish invention to begin with, it's so expensive and so heavy. I also love digital photography. It gives me a kind of freedom that I didn't have before and I truly enjoy getting away from the chemicals and the dark. Someone once told me that there are no mistakes with digital as there is with analog, that there is no room for something unexpected to happen but I disagree. There are still so many things I can't control like the weather, the natural light and of coruse how the person I photograph appears.

Photos are like frozen moments of time. When ever I see one that I've taken it's like I travel back in time. They make me remember and in my head it's like a short film being played. I like to put images on my walls because it makes me feel surrounded by loved once and the memories of them. But today I've torn a bunch of these photos into thousands of pieces...sometimes there are somethings or people you just don't want to remember anymore. It felt good ripping the memories apart and throwing it out with the trash.
I tell people that I have the memory of a goldfish while my beloved sister says that I am long-sighted, maybe I'm something in between. There are now things in my life that I know I can never forgive...but I will try to forget, like there never was any photos taken. And it makes me glad to know that as long as I am blessed with this life there will be many images to come, many new frozen moments of time.

People say it's harder to make new friends the older you get. It might be a little bit true because it's easy to get to know people if you for example go to a new school or so. But I truly beleive it's so much about being awake and seeing what kind of energy a person has. The first time I meet Gerri my life had just been turned upside down. Normally I think people would say that I come of as quite solid, happy and strong. I was so far away from that half a year ago. But I believe that is why I connected so fast with this lovely woman. When you start of by letting your guard down and that other person values that, it's just wonderful...so how could I say no when she asked if I could take a portrait of her. The light was just amazing that day in Berlin and we had so much fun talking about life, love and things in between. See you in February darling!

Now it's been more than a week since I was in Berlin for the opening of the exhibition GIRLS. It's a photographic exhibition that I've put together with the German photographer Manolo Ty. I was happily surprised that so many people showed up and also wanted to talk with me in person. It's been such a long time since I took part in a photographic exhibition and it was so much fun. A lot of my Berlin friends showed up but I also know that a lot of the people who wanted to be there couldn't. So I have decided to post all the photos that were included in the GIRLS exhibition here, I hope you enjoy. Ina and the last breath of Summer

When I find a location I can not really describe why it speaks to me, why I find it interesting. I think it's just an instinct, a feeling in my stomach that tell me that it's a great spot. I have just learned to trust that feeling and beleive in it. It's the same with people that I bump into now and then. So when I, one late Summer evening, hungry for a snack went into Burger King and saw Ina I just knew she would be great to photograph. It's a good thing I'm a woman because I can just do that, ask random, beautiful girls on the street if I can photograph them without them thinking I'm a pervert. Anyway, this last weekend I finally had time to take Inas portrait. She really understood that bohemian, dreamy feeling that I was aiming for. These pictures are my favorites...

This beautiful young woman is Madelene. About a month ago she saved me when I still the day before a big wedding didn't have an assistant. With very short notice she said yes and she proved to be very good at assisting. To thank her I took her portrait on the way home after the wedding. Madelene also enjoys taking pictures but hasn't modeled that much. I think she did really good and there is something very pure about the way she moved and posed.

I spent 2 weeks of August in Italy. Most of the time I stayed in a super hot Milano but for a couple of days I went to the countryside to visit my friend Luigi. Hi's family owns a castle from (I think) the 1700 century in a place called Chesuola. It was so wonderful and peaceful there, like cotton for your soul. I had no access to internet and my phone died, but you don't need any of those things when you are in the company of good friends. It was also nice to get some time to think and reflect. This Summer I worked almost every weekend, leaving not so much time to do anything. This was definitely one of the best moments of my Summer and I wish I could travel back in time...

A couple of weeks ago I spent some hours outside Malmö together with the make-up artist Sandra Haraldsen and the model Gabriella Calheira Diestel. We played around with different looks and had a blast. We created 2 different styles, one more romantic that you find here and one a little bit more raw that you find below this post. Most of the things are Gabriella's and I'm in love with her wardrobe. She has so many wonderful things! She is also such a free spirit full of ideas. This was the first time I did something together with Sandra and I will for sure do it again! Why not the three of us...

Bella and the magic garden

I see myself as a portrait photographer who flirts with fashion. It's mainly because I don't think you should shoot fashion if you don't know it very well. There are so many photographer out there who call themselves fashion photographers but you can really tell that they don't know what they are doing. As I have written before I grew up in a small town where there wasn't any people that could inspire you fashion wise. Growing up I had no taste what so ever and It wasn't until I moved to Berlin 2 years ago that I really got interested in fashion. Suddenly I was surrounded by these people who really inspired me and in a way guided me. Don't get me wrong I have always loved reading Vogue, Elle and other magazines. Today I totally adore LOVE. My dream is to one day shoot for that magazine. I'm planning on doing photoshoots now that are more towards style, make-up and fashion. What you see in this post was really going to be a portrait shoot but when Bella (model/DJ) showed up in that crazy/beautiful make-up and with a bag full of cool things it kind of became something else. She is incredibly tall and slim, has a wonderful, outgoing personality and she has without a doubt a creative soul who has no boundaries. You just gotta love that...

I'm sorry my friend that it has taken me so long to develop these pictures of you. I still remember the support and kindness you showed me that day in Berlin when I so needed it. After some early drinks we went to sunny Mauerpark, spoke about life's ups and downs, about how there are ends but also beginnings. We took some photos and I realized that no matter how shitty things get no one can take away my creativity. Thank you again for giving me perspective and also for being an awesome Jesus lookalike.

I'm in the middle of wedding season. I have already done five weddings and I have three more to come. I'm a romantic person who believes in the hole loving one person thing. Lately it's been hard since my own relationship ended in May. Sometimes things just doesn't work out even if you want to. For two people to be able to love each other in a similar way and wanting the same things at the same time is so rare. Meeting and photographing all of these beautiful couples who are so in love is a little bit painful but it's also giving me hope and bringing me happiness. Nothing will ever be perfect in this world but having someone there who loves you and will be there for better, for worse is a beautiful thing.

A saga moment with Sabine

Right now I'm sitting at home in my apartment in Malmö. It's late and I'm listening to Lykke Li's latest album and I love it. She is just one of those girls who got "it". It's like they never get lost and just knows what's good early on. I on the other hand seems to always be a little bit lost. But when it comes to photography for once I feel like I'm totally right, but it took me a long time to find "it".
I love that I get to meet so many interesting people that gives my life meaning and that I get to see so much beauty. I find women so beautiful, I hardly photograph men because I find it hard to connect with them through the camera. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally into men but they are not magical like women. Sabine in this post has that saga thing going on. She is a Swedish art student that I met last year at a party. I knew that she would be good to photograph but I didn't know that she would kick as! I just came back from a nice week in Berlin. I can't beleive that it's a year ago that I moved back to Sweden. When I left I was so sure that I never wanted to live there again. It's not that I didn't like it I just wanted something else, like I always do. I guess that is one of my problems, that I like to run into new stuff all the time. I both love and hate change, I need it but I resent it. Will I ever find peace somewhere? What I really like about Berlin is that it's so alive and there are so many outgoing, interesting and creative people. I feel like I belong there in way I don't do in Malmö.
In Berlin I photographed two models from the same agency, Cymage Models Berlin. First I will show you pictures of Anneke Schäl, who is also a good friend of mine. Last time I photographed her in Berlin it was so cold and gray. This time we walked around for a couple of hours in Tiergarten. It was my first time there during springtime and I fell in love with it. It's so big, so green and beautiful. You totally forget that you are in a big city...

I like to think of my pictures as an escape of reality. I've loved fairy tales since forever and I have a vivid imagination. I'm one of those people who can shut out the world when reading a book or watching a film. I'm drawn towards people who looks different then the rest of us. They definitely don't have to be models, just have something unordinary. Cosette is definitely one of them. Her red long hair, pail skin and big eyes makes her look like she just walked out from a saga. I guess that's why I love photographing her, that and the fact that she loves climbing trees...

Jag har varit ovanligt tyst här på bloggen den senaste månaden, men jag har haft fullt upp med retusch och assistentjobb. Därför kändes det helt underbart när min vän och modell Josefine kom på besök. Då fick jag äntligen vara kreativ på mitt eget vis igen. Josefine är naturligt blond och det var första gången jag plåtade henne såhär mörkhårig. Vilken skillnad det blev både i uttryck och känsla. Hon förvandlades till en femme fatal med sina blodröda läppar och blek hy. Jag hade inte riktigt någon ide från början och kanske är det därför resultatet blev så olika och brett.

I have been very quiet lately on the blog, but I have been busy with retouching and assisting. That's why I thought it was absolutely lovely when my friend and model Josefine came to visit me. Finally I got to be creative in my own way again.
Josefine is a natural blond and this was the first time I took pictures of her as a brunette. Her pale skin, red lips and new attitude kind of turned her into a femme fatal. I didn't really have an idea when we started out and maybe that's why we got such a big variation of pictures.

Idag har jag spenderat min sista dag i Milano. Imorgon flyger jag hem till Malmö igen. Det har varit en trevlig liten mini semester. Mestadels av tiden har jag spenderat med att chilla med killen men jag har också hunnit med att se en modevisning, besöka en av Milanos största och äldsta kyrkogårdar, assistera på Tassilis behind the scenes plåtning för modeveckan, ätit sushi tills jag nästan kräkts, sett en inspirerande fotoutställning och sist men inte minst haft en plåtning med Ambra. Henne träffade jag första gången för nästan ett år sedan när jag besökte Milano för första gången. Hon har en fin personlighet och ett härligt leende. Så när jag funderar kring en plåtning så tänkte jag nästan direkt på henne. Vi spenderade lite mer än 1 timme i Parco Sempione. I Sverige är det fortfarande så förbannat kallt, det känns som om våren aldrig kommer komma. Men här finns det små vårtecken överallt. Jag blev lycklig när jag hittade ett träd med rosa blommor. Det fick mig att känna mig lite mer levande igen...

Today was my last day in Milan. Tomorrow I will fly home to Malmö again. It's been a nice little getaway. Most of the time I have been chilling with my boyfriend but I also managed to see a fashion show, go to one of the oldest and largest cemetery in Milan, to eat sushi until I almost puked, assist Tassili at a behind the scenes shoot for fashion week, to see a photo exhibition and last but not least to have a photoshoot with Ambra. I met her almost a year ago when I saw Milan for the first time. She has a warm personality and a beautiful smile. So when I was planning a photoshoot in Milan I directly thought about her. We spent a little bit more than one hour walking around in Parco Sempione. In Sweden it is still so cold and it feels like forever until it will be spring. But here you can see signs of spring everywhere. I was very happy when I found a tree with pink flowers. It made me feel a little bit
more alive...

Berlin part 1 Cosima

För ett par veckor sedan drog jag till Berlin för att träffa härliga människor, dricka och äta billigt och för att få en fin dos kultur. När jag var där passade jag såklart på att även ha några plåtningar. Idag ger jag er bilder på Cosima och imorgon är det Annekes tur. Jag fotograferade båda på samma sätt och på samma platser, men på olika dagar. Även om förutsättningarna var samma blev det relativt stor skillnad på bilderna. Jag gillar verkligen det faktum att ljuset och min sinnesstämning har en sådan inverkan på resultatet. Jag tror det hindrar mig från att göra allt för stora upprepningar. Men så har jag alltid haft svårt för att göra samma sak mer än en gång.

A couple of weeks ago I went to Berlin to meet up with some awesome people, to drink and eat cheap and inhale some culture. When I was there I also had two very nice photoshoots. Today I will give you some images of Cosima and tomorrow it will be Annekes turn. I photographed them in the same way and at the same places, but on different days. They turned out more different than you might think. I like the fact that the light and the state of my mind has a big impact on the way the pictures turns out. I think that helps me from not repeating myself to much. But then again I have always had a problems with doing the exact thing twice.

Now and then you find someone on the internet that makes you stop for a second. That's the way I felt the first time I saw Cosette. She got a look that really sticks out. I felt immediately that I wanted to photograph her. So we met up at Pildammsparken in Malmö and had great a shooting.

Idag är det fredag och jag har haft en mycket fin dag. Tillsammans med fotografen Mikael Leijon (www.mikaelleijon.se) har jag fotograferat i studion. Micke är verkligen grym på ljussättningar och jag har lärt mig mycket av honom. Heidi Edberg (www.heidiedberg.com) stod som vanligt för en fantastisk make och hårstyling. Tankar/thoughts

Vi önskar oss alla olika saker här i livet men förhoppningsvis strävar vi alla efter en lycka som ger livet en mening. I många år höll jag på med hästar. När jag var liten var hästar det enda jag tänkte på alla vakna timmar på dygnet. Jag hade privilegiet att kunna få en egen ponny och senare häst vilket jag är evigt tacksam mina föräldrar för. Men när jag blev äldre så förstod jag mer och mer att jag var ute efter en kick. Det handlade inte längre om långa turer i skogen och timmar av borstning. Kicken fick jag när jag hoppade höga hinder eller gjorde bra ifrån mig på tävlingar. Det är en ofantlig skön känsla när endorfiner rusar genom din kropp. Men jag upplevde också ofta det motsatta. När det gick riktigt dåligt kunde jag älta det om och om igen. Jag gick runt med en tung klump i magen. Men så hittade jag ett nytt sätt att kunna få den där kicken, utan att behöva riskera de djupa dalarna. Jag upptäckte fotografiet. Det är såklart inte alltid den infinner sig men när den gör det efter en plåtning är det först en gött high och sedan ett skönt lugn. Fotografiet får mig också att upptäcka nya platser. Jag minns tillbaka till NY, våren 09 då jag spenderade flera timmar på en äldre och enorm kyrkogård. Jag hade inte läst tillräckligt noga på skylten innan jag spatserade in genom de enorma järngrindarna och lyckades med bedriften att bli inlåst. Visst reagerade jag lite på att jag inte såg en enda människa under mina 3 timmar där. Jag tog några självporträtt och vandrade runt i sen eftermiddagssolen. Det låter kanske lite konstigt men jag gillar att läsa på gravar, av någon anledning får det mig att känna mig mer levande. Det blir så bekräftat att man kommer att dö, att vi alla bara får en liten del tid.
När jag väl kom tillbaka till de 3 meter höga grindarna så drabbades jag inte av panik, fast jag läste att kyrkogården inte skulle öppna förrän dagen efter och att det var ett brott att vistas där under stängd tid. Det hade nu blivit en tidig och varm majkväll och jag gick längs med kyrkogården tills jag efter en halvtimme hittade en väg ut. Det var hål i staketet och sedan fick jag klättra ner för en mur vägg på 2,5 m. Jag blev lite utstirrad av förbi passerande när jag damp ner på vägen. Trött och törstig, men riktigt nöjd promenerade jag tillbaka mot tunnelbanan.

We all wish for different things in life but hopefully most of all we look for happiness that gives life a meaning. When I was little it was horses. I thought about horses every waking moment. But as I got older I realized that it was more and more about the "kick". It wasn't so much about just spending time with them, it was about jumping high fences and competitions. The feeling of endorphin running through your body is very powerful and intoxicating. But if I did bad in a showjumping class I felt like the world would end. But then I found a more solid way that didn't included the lows as much, I found photography. I don't always get the "kick" from a shoot but then I hardly ever get the lows. Through photography I have found many interesting people and places. The photo you see in this post in from an old cemetery in NY. I enjoy cemeteries because they make me feel alive. It might seem strange but I think it's because reading about all the people that once existed makes me realize that my time here is short and precious.

Så var det igen ett nytt vitt år som ligger framför oss alla. Jag brukar inte ha några nyårslöften utan jag önskar mer efter något jag hoppas ska hända. En längre tid var det att träffa någon som tyckte om mig precis som jag är. Efter att ha träffat en hög idioter så önskade jag mig någon som jag inte behövde anpassa mig efter. När jag träffade Tassili i Berlin så tänkte jag att nu ska jag fan vara mig själv till 100 % och om det går åt helvete så har jag i alla fall inte ljugit för mig själv. Lyckligtvis hade han inga problem med en egensinnig, feministisk vegetarian med stora ambitioner. Det år vi varit tillsammans har jag vuxit ett steg till som person och upptäckt nya sidor hos mig själv. Du vet aldrig hur framtiden kommer te sig och jag föredrar att ta varje dag som den kommer. Jag har många drömmar och detta året är mitt mål att i alla fall förverkliga minst en...

Once again there is a new year ahead of us all. I usually don't make any new years promises to myself. I'm more wishing for something that I want to happen during the year. For a long time it was to meet someone who would like me just the way I am. After meeting a lot of idiots I wished for someone that I wouldn't have to change for or adapt to. So when I met Tassili in Berlin I promised myself that I was gonna be me to 100% and if it didn't work at least I hadn't lied to myself. Luckily he had no problem with a strong minded, feminist vegetarian who has great plans for herself. The year that we now have been together I feel like I have grown as a person and discovered new sides of myself. You never know what the future is gonna look like and I like to embrace each day as it comes. I have a lot of dreams and this year my goal is to make at least one of them come true...

I must say that it's very beautiful with all the snow in Malmö, but I hate that it has to be so cold. I was in the park the other day with my friends Amadeus. It was several degrees below zero and you can really tell that he's cold. It was one of the fastest portraits shoots I had because it was impossible to stay there more than 25 min. Apparently this is the coldest Winter in Skåne (the south of Sweden) in at least 100 years.

Winter has arrived in Malmö and it's quite cold. But that has of course not stopped me from taking pictures outdoors of people with not so much clothes on. That is one of the worst things about this country. The weather could be a lot nicer so that my models didn't have to freeze their asses of as often as they do. This time it was the super tall and beautiful Bellas turn. We spent around 2 hours taking pictures by the sea and in a park.

Most of the time when I take pictures I like to keep it simple and small. Very often it's just me and the model. Sometimes I do her makeup and hair but usually she does it herself. Often I don't have an assistant but I like it that way. The bigger things get the more pressure there is and the more pressure there is the more I lose my passion for what I do. But of course I also enjoy a challenge and I don't what to say to much right now but I just been asked to take part in something big and I'm excited. Maybe I will tell you more in a near future. Once again I have been in Berlin and once again I took photos of Cosima, my German friend. We walked around in Tiergarten and several times we found ourselves completely alone. That is one of the things I love about Berlin. It is so spread out and green that you sometimes forget what a big city it is. I went and saw the Peter Lindbergh exhibition at C/O Berlin. On a wall they had printed an interview with Lindbergh and one thing that caught me was that he spoke about how you as a photographer always return to the surroundings of your childhood. If you grew up in a city that is most likely what you would like to photograph and I believe that's true. For me it's the opposite, I live in a city because I feel like I have to and off course I like it in a way, but it's in nature that I grew up and it's there that I feel most at ease. And there is something mysterious about nature, it's not something we have created. I just can't help myself for coming back for more.

I tell people that I come from a small village, but that's not really true, I'm actually from outside a small village. This place is called Hönsholma and if you would want to translate that into English it would be something like Chickentown. But I have never seen a chicken in my life there. But this summer I saw a big beautiful field of corn there. I drove past it everyday and saw the plants get bigger and bigger and more and more beautiful. So before I left this summer I had to have photo shoot there. I called the farmer who owns the land and he totally agreed with me, that it would be cool to take pictures there and he gave me his blessing. So all I had to do now was to find a model. I called in a dear friend of mine. Her name is Josefine and she is from the same village. We have been friends for many years now and I don't get to see her as much as I wanted. It was wonderful to create something together again...

Cosima in Berlin

I don't live in Berlin anymore, Malmö is now my city. But like NY, Berlin has definitely left it's mark on me. It is a wonderful place and I will go back for sure. During my stay I met so many interesting and cool people and I hope I will be able to stay in contact with them. And even if I don't get to see them as often as I wish I have photos of them (of course!). I worked so much this summer that I only had one opportunity to visit my former city. While I was there I took portrait of this girl you see. It was the second time I photographed Cosima and this time we stayed indoors in my boyfriends apartment. I can't remember what the weather was like but when I look at the photos it feels like it was raining outside. But that could also just be something I am imagining. I like these photos because they have a silence in them that is both calming and worrying. What do you think?
